Kratom Alkaloids Explained: What Are the Natural Alkaloids in Kratom?

When researching kratom in Canada, you'll frequently encounter one word: alkaloids.

But what exactly are kratom alkaloids? Why is mitragynine discussed so often? What is 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)? And why can the alkaloid profile of one batch of kratom differ from another?

What Are Kratom Alkaloids?

Alkaloids are a broad group of naturally occurring compounds produced by many plants. In kratom, researchers have identified dozens of alkaloids, with scientific reviews commonly reporting at least 40.

Kratom comes from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa, a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. The plant's alkaloids are one of the main reasons its chemistry has received so much scientific attention.

Importantly, kratom isn't composed of one alkaloid. It contains a complex mixture of major and minor compounds.

Mitragynine: The Major Kratom Alkaloid

The most widely researched kratom alkaloid is mitragynine.

Scientific reviews report that mitragynine can account for roughly two-thirds of the total alkaloid content in some kratom leaf material, although composition naturally varies.

This abundance is one reason laboratory reports for kratom frequently include a measurement for mitragynine.

Researchers have also found that mitragynine interacts with several biological receptor systems, including opioid receptors. This is important context because kratom's alkaloids are pharmacologically active compounds—not simply markers of botanical freshness.

What Is 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)?

Another alkaloid receiving considerable attention is 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly shortened to 7-OH or 7-HMG.

Unlike mitragynine, 7-OH is generally found at very low or trace concentrations in ordinary kratom leaf material and conventional products. Research also indicates that some 7-OH can form through oxidation during post-harvest processing and as a metabolite of mitragynine in the body.

This distinction matters because ordinary kratom leaf powder and products deliberately enriched with high concentrations of 7-OH should not be treated as chemically equivalent.

7-OH has substantially greater activity at the μ-opioid receptor than mitragynine, which is one reason unusually elevated concentrations deserve particular attention from consumers, researchers and regulators.

Kratom Contains Many More Alkaloids

Mitragynine and 7-OH receive most of the attention, but they aren't the whole story.

Researchers have characterized numerous kratom alkaloids, including:

One detailed chemical investigation characterized 19 separate alkaloids using modern analytical techniques.

Scientists know considerably more about mitragynine than many of these minor constituents, so it would be misleading to imply that every kratom alkaloid has a fully understood role.

Why Do Kratom Alkaloid Levels Vary?

One of the most important things Canadian customers should understand is that kratom is botanical material.

It isn't a synthetic product manufactured to contain an identical chemical profile every time.

Research has found substantial variability among kratom products and extracts. Analytical studies have measured differences not only in mitragynine but also in compounds such as paynantheine, speciociliatine and speciogynine.

Potential contributors to variation include the plant material, genetics, growing conditions, leaf maturity, harvest, drying, processing and storage.

That's why two powders that look nearly identical aren't necessarily chemically identical.

Does a Darker or Greener Kratom Powder Have More Alkaloids?

You cannot reliably determine an alkaloid percentage simply by looking at kratom powder.

A brighter green appearance doesn't automatically mean higher mitragynine, and a darker powder doesn't automatically mean lower quality.

Colour can be influenced by leaf material and post-harvest processing.

If you actually want to know the concentration of specific alkaloids, analytical laboratory testing is far more meaningful than visual inspection.

How Are Kratom Alkaloids Tested?

Modern laboratories can use sophisticated analytical methods to separate, identify and quantify compounds in kratom.

Researchers have developed methods using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to simultaneously quantify multiple key kratom alkaloids. One published method measured ten alkaloids across kratom extracts and commercial products.

Other chemical research has used technologies including NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry to characterize individual kratom compounds.

For customers, the important takeaway is simple:

An alkaloid percentage should come from analytical testing—not someone's opinion about how the powder looks.

Why Batch Testing Matters

Because botanical material varies, one laboratory result shouldn't automatically be assumed to represent every future batch.

This is why batch identification and traceability are important.

When evaluating a kratom supplier, Canadian customers can ask whether a laboratory report identifies the relevant batch or lot and what compounds and contaminants were actually tested.

An impressive-looking certificate isn't especially useful if it cannot be connected to the product in front of you.

Alkaloid Testing Isn't the Same as Safety Testing

This distinction is extremely important.

A laboratory report showing the percentage of mitragynine doesn't automatically establish that a product is free from microbiological contamination or heavy metals.

Those are separate testing questions.

A meaningful botanical quality program can therefore involve different categories of analysis rather than relying on a single alkaloid number.

Potency testing and contaminant testing answer different questions.

More Alkaloids Doesn't Automatically Mean “Better Kratom”

This is another misconception worth addressing.

A higher alkaloid concentration shouldn't automatically be interpreted as better, safer or more desirable.

Alkaloids are biologically active compounds, and concentration is simply analytical information about composition.

This is especially important with highly concentrated extracts or products containing unusually elevated levels of specific compounds such as 7-OH.

The goal of responsible laboratory analysis should be understanding what's in the product, not turning every laboratory number into a marketing competition.

Why Alkaloids Matter When Comparing Kratom in Canada

If you're comparing kratom vendors in Canada, alkaloid information can help you understand what you're actually looking at.

Instead of relying entirely on terms such as:

Premium • Strong • Super • Fresh • Red • Green • White

...look for meaningful information about source, batch identification, laboratory analysis, processing and quality control.

Names can help distinguish products.

Laboratory analysis helps describe their chemistry.

What Does Health Canada Say About Kratom?

Canadian consumers should also understand kratom's regulatory context.

Health Canada states that kratom can produce both stimulant- and narcotic-like effects and identifies risks including abuse and addiction. Canadian consumers should therefore avoid interpreting discussion of alkaloids as a claim that kratom is an approved treatment or ordinary health supplement.

Research into kratom continues, and scientific understanding of many of its minor alkaloids remains incomplete.

That makes accurate, responsible information especially important.
